The three-day event highlights the intersection of creativity and technology through exhibitions, screenings and workshops featuring work from Swinburne’s VET students.
Creative Intersections bridges education and industry, offering students real-world platforms to showcase their innovation and foster interdisciplinary collaboration.
Swinburne’s Vocational Education and Training (VET) division is set to host Creative Intersections, a three-day event celebrating the intersection of creativity and technology at ACMI.
Running from 6-8 December 2024, the event will showcase the talents and innovations of VET students from Swinburne’s Business, Arts & Design, Media, and Information Computer Technologies (BDMICT) departments.
Michael Watchorn, Director of Swinburne’s BDMICT Vocational Education and Training, reflected on the evolution of this event.
“It started six months ago as a concept and idea - how best to showcase the work of BDMICT students within the VET course areas at Swinburne.
“Staff and students across these disciplines, collaborated and came up with the concept for Creative Intersections, an event at ACMI complementing the annual screen and media event CINAESTHESIA, which showcases student-created films,” Watchorn said.
“Creative Intersections has focused on the theme of people and technology working together to build a better world. This event demonstrates this in a way that is exciting, innovative, and captivating.”
Emma McDonald, Swinburne Digital Business Program Lead, emphasised the transformative value of granting students’ opportunities to present their work in professional contexts.
“Events like Creative Intersections offer students invaluable opportunities to showcase their talent and creativity on a professional stage, connecting them with industry leaders and real-world audiences,” McDonald said.
Held in collaboration with ACMI, Australia’s home of screen culture, the event highlights student achievements through exhibitions, screenings, and workshops, reinforcing Swinburne’s commitment to linking education with industry and community.
“These partnerships bridge the gap between education and industry, fostering confidence, collaboration, and career-readiness. It's inspiring to see our students thrive in environments where their innovation and hard work is celebrated," McDonald said.
Creative Intersections highlights the potential of people and technology working together
Creative Intersections offers a glimpse into the innovative and diverse work of Swinburne’s VET students, blending creativity with cutting-edge technology. Highlights include striking visual and digital art installations that explore the themes of identity and modern landscapes, as well as a series of short films showcasing fresh talent from the Screen and Media department.
These showcases not only highlight the breadth of student talent but also emphasise their ability to address contemporary challenges with creative vision.
“It's exciting to see students and staff breaking new ground by working across disciplines to bring this innovative event to life,” McDonald added.
Creative Intersections offers students a platform to display their talents and prepares students for the demands of a rapidly evolving creative economy.
